Een depressie staat bekend als een stemmingsstoornis. Maar het is niet alleen de stemming die te lijden heeft. Behalve somberheid lijdt de patiënt aan futloosheid, traagheid, overgevoeligheid, slecht slapen, gebrek aan eetlust en mensenschuwheid. Gelukkig wordt een depressie tegenwoordig sneller onderkend.
Maar de mythes over depressiviteit blijven hardnekkig. Zo wordt vaak beweerd dat een depressieve patiënt moet worden geactiveerd, bijvoorbeeld door hem elke dag flinke afstanden te laten hardlopen. Maar de depressieve patiënt heeft meer baat bij absolute rust; en zal zelf ook moeten accepteren dat uren nietsdoen en stilte juist genezend werken. Ook wordt door kwakzalvers vaak geopperd dat de depressieve patiënt onder de mensen moet blijven. Het tegendeel is waar: sociaal contact is zo vermoeiend dat zelfs een gewoon gesprek van een kwartier voor totale overprikkeling kan zorgen. Geen wonder dat de patiënt er tegenop zal zien om een afspraak van anderhalf uur bij de bedrijfsarts te hebben. Het vooruitzicht alleen al is zo uitputtend dat de patiënt al instort als hij net over de drempel stapt. Laat dan ook nog menig bedrijfsarts de patiënt onder druk zetten om zo snel mogelijk weer aan het werk te gaan, en de depressie zal acuut verergeren. Deze bedrijfsartsen hanteren het motto ‘hoe sneller de patiënt re-integreert des te beter het is’. Maar ook dat is klinkklare onzin. Deugdelijk genezing van een depressie kan alleen als de druk van artsen en instanties achterwege blijft. De patiënt heeft al moeite genoeg om zijn collega’s zo lang in de steek te laten; en is er niet bij gebaat om een schuldgevoel aangepraat te krijgen. Een depressie is geen kortdurende, emotionele verkoudheid, maar een ernstige psychische ziekte die alleen geneest door geduld en begrip, zo zou ook het leger aan keuringsartsen moeten beseffen. Ten onrechte wordt dan ook vaak gedacht dat de depressieve patiënt gewoon geen wilskracht toont. Welnu, een depressie kenmerkt zich nu juist door het feit dat de gezonde wilskracht ernstig is aangetast. In gedachte zou de patiënt van alles willen, maar hij merkt bij voortduring dat zijn innerlijke kracht totaal ontbreekt. De depressieve patiënt is geen saboteur van mensen die hem op sleeptouw willen nemen. Het brein staat niet toe dat de patiënt iets wil om hem te beschermen tegen overprikkeling.
Alleen wie een depressie heeft doorgemaakt, weet hoeveel tijd en geduld nodig is om er van te herstellen. De buitenwacht moet zwijgen; behalve als er een stem van compassie kan klinken.
